Heritage Players: A Community Gem Shining Through Dedication and Talent

When we think about the arts, especially community theater, it’s easy to overlook the immense effort that happens behind the scenes. The Heritage Players, based at the Elizabeth Seton Center in Brookline, Pittsburgh, exemplify how passion, commitment, and a sense of community can create magic on stage. Nicole Zalak, the President of Heritage Players, shares her inspiring story, the organization’s mission, and the challenges they face, all while celebrating her recent recognition as a Pittsburgh SITI Girl Honors Creative Tastemaker Award Winner.

A Passionate Beginning

Nicole’s journey with Heritage Players began in 2004 after she attended their production of West Side Story. Like many others, she had never experienced live theater before, and that performance ignited a spark within her. “I turned to my mother and said, ‘I want to do this,’” she recalls. Shortly after, she auditioned for Annie and quickly found a second home in the theater. Over the years, she honed her skills in acting, directing, and production design, ultimately becoming the president in 2017.

“Heritage was more than just a place to act; it was where I learned to direct, design sets, and run technical aspects of production,” Nicole explains. The mentorship she received from experienced members, like former tech director Jay Breckenridge, was instrumental in her growth.

Fostering Talent and Building Community

Under Nicole’s leadership, Heritage Players has not only produced outstanding performances but also fostered a culture of learning and inclusivity. The organization offers opportunities for everyone—from seasoned actors to those interested in behind-the-scenes roles. “We create a space where individuals can learn skills ranging from costume design to technical operations,” she explains.

Challenges: Funding and Visibility

Despite their successes, Heritage Players faces challenges common to community theaters, primarily funding. “We rely on ticket sales and generous donations. Grants have been elusive, which is disheartening, but our community support is unwavering,” Nicole shares. The organization is currently undertaking a significant renovation of seating at the Elizabeth Seton Center, a project they are managing themselves, demonstrating their dedication to both the theater and the community.

However, Nicole emphasizes a critical need for help in publicity. “We’re a working board, and while we manage productions, social media often slips through the cracks. We could really use assistance in promoting our shows and getting the word out in local communities,” she explains.

Celebrating a Legacy

The spirit of Heritage Players extends beyond just performances; it’s about building lasting relationships. “Many of my closest friends, including my husband, came from Heritage,” Nicole smiles. “The connections we build here are lifelong, both on and off the stage.”

Nicole’s recent award as a Creative Tastemaker highlights her significant impact within the community theater landscape. “I was truly touched by the support from everyone at Heritage Players during the nomination process,” she reflects. “It’s a testament to the strong community we’ve built together.”
