SITI Girl Honors is your chance to recognize the extraordinary women making a profound impact in our world. We’re celebrating the incredible women of Pittsburgh who inspire us all. Winners will then go on to compete against SITI Girl Award winners internationally.

SITI GIRL WOMAN OF THE YEAR SANDAHL TAYLOR
Given to an exceptional woman in any field doing amazing things in the world.

Sandahl, a cosmetologist and instructor at South Hills Beauty Academy, is the founder of Connecting Hearts Changing Lives Foundation where they give free haircuts, collect and distribute basic hygiene products, and provide heart health education to Veterans, unhoused, and anyone in need. To date, they have given over 1650 free haircuts to veterans, clients at men’s and women’s shelters and more.. 

She has been an advocate for the American Heart Association for 19 years. Because of her community service, she was recruited into the pageant circuit, where she’s won titles for years. Taylor is the first woman to represent Pennsylvania for three years in a row — 2021 through 2023 — as Mrs. Pennsylvania Galaxy.

VOICE OF THE SITI AWARD – DENISE GRAVES
Given to the #SITIGirl who is a compelling communicator and uses her voice to challenge perspectives, champion ideas, and spark critical conversation. She is a master of her craft and has significantly impacted the community (personal or professional) using her voice.

Denise Graves (standing to the left in the photo) is the Co-Founder of the Extravagant Love Project, is dedicated to transforming the lives of women in Pittsburgh who have experienced trauma, abuse, and homelessness. Through outreach events, holistic healing sessions, and strategic community partnerships, Denise and her team provide essential resources and mentorship, helping women rediscover their identities and rebuild their lives. As a Pastor at Covenant Church of Pittsburgh, Denise emphasizes the importance of both inner and outer healing in the journey toward recovery and empowerment.

DREAM QUEEN VISIONARY AWARD – LIZ JOHNSON*

Named in honor of our CEO, this award is given to a forward-thinking business owner who is doing amazing things in her business and/or community.

Bucket Wish Connection began when Liz dreamed of creating a tiny home community for adults with Autism. Though the dream was paused, it stayed on her Bucket list. During a challenging time in 2023, Liz felt a strong calling to not only pursue her own Wish but to help others make theirs visible as well. In April 2024, Bucket Wish Connection was launched, offering a space where people can share their Wishes and needs, and others can help grant them, spreading happiness through love and connection.

THE QUEENMAKER AWARD – DIONNA ORTEGA
Given to a woman who has consistently mentored and/or uplifted women in their community. In loving memory of Nanette Weeks-Trombatore.

Dionna Ortega, a Zumba instructor with over 16 years of experience, shares her journey from a passion for dance to becoming a wellness advocate in her community. Zumba, for Dionna, is more than just a workout—it’s a joyful, therapeutic experience that promotes both physical and mental well-being. She emphasizes the inclusivity and community spirit of her classes, encouraging everyone to join, regardless of dance experience. For Dionna, teaching Zumba is about spreading happiness and inspiring others to embrace movement as a key to a fulfilling life.

THE WALKER CHANGE AGENT AWARD – AIJALON BROWN
Given to a woman who demonstrates dedication to her community in service, advocacy, outreach, and the use of her platform. In loving memory of Kimberly J. Walker.

Aijalon is the founder of the Social Butterfly Experience, a wellness brand that began as a clothing line and blog in 2020 and has since expanded to include a health and wellness podcast, coaching services, and wellness products. Balancing her entrepreneurial journey with graduate studies, She is passionate about mental health, particularly within communities of color, and is dedicated to helping others find balance and resilience. With future aspirations in the medical field as a physician assistant, she continues to inspire through her work in mental health and wellness.

THE UNSUNG HERO AWARD – JACQUEA JACKSON
Given to a woman who has beat the odds or has been considered the underdog.

Jacquea is a visionary entrepreneur and the proud owner of JCBU Fragrance Company LLC, where she crafts luxurious, eco-friendly fragrances. Known for her passion for community empowerment and sustainable living, she inspires others to embrace creativity and purpose in their daily lives. Always striving for a greener and cleaner future, she is set to launch EcoFusion Home & Body soon, where she is committed to giving back to the those in need — with every product purchased, one is donated.

THE CREATIVE TASTEMAKER AWARD – NICOLE ZALAK

Given to a woman in the fine arts, performing arts, or fashion making a mark in her creative field.

Nicole Zalak is the board president of the nonprofit theatre, The Heritage Players, located in Brookline. There, she works as a director, dialect coach, costume designer, and many other production staff positions. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre from The Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

SITI IN STEM AWARD – DR. ANDREA MEDRANO
Given to the #SITIGirl who demonstrates passion and advocacy for women in STEM and champions the cause to empower women to enter and take up space in STEM industries.

Andrea S. Medrano, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. She directs the Community Research Exploring Adolescent Resilience Lab (CREAR Lab), a research group comprised of majority bilingual, bicultural, first-generation women.  She is dedicated to fostering a supportive environment where students in STEM can thrive, providing mentorship and opportunities that enable them to build confidence, advance their skills, and take on leadership roles in their field. Together with her team, Dr. Medrano draws from a resilience framework and strengths-based perspective to uplift, empower, and support individuals facing gender-based violence in the U.S. and Latin America.

SITI Girl Woman of the Year Nominee

Jennifer Solomon, the dynamic leader of the Jennifer Solomon Team at RE/MAX Select Realty, has built a thriving real estate career marked by integrity, perseverance, and a deep commitment to her clients. Beyond her professional success, Jennifer’s mission-driven approach, rooted in faith and a passion for empowering others, sets her apart. As the founder of the Women in Real Estate Foundation (WINR) and various youth empowerment initiatives, Jennifer is dedicated to making a lasting impact on her community, proving that true success is measured by the lives she touches and the hope she inspires.

Kathryn Kos is a powerful force in the realms of health, wellness, and creative expression. As a seasoned nutritional therapist, author, and poet, she empowers others to embrace holistic well-being through personalized dietary guidance and profound literary works. Kathryn’s journey, shaped by personal health challenges and a commitment to enriching lives, is reflected in her bestselling books, including “Forties on Fire” and “Yet, Still She Shines.” Her work is a testament to the strength found in vulnerability and the beauty of living a balanced, empowered life.

Queenmaker Award Nominee

Alysse is a dedicated mental health professional with a solid educational foundation, having earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh in 2015, followed by dual Master’s degrees in Social Work and Public Health in 2020. With over a decade of experience across various mental health settings, Alysse has worked with clients facing a range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship issues. She is particularly committed to supporting sexual and gender minorities, individuals with different abilities, and other marginalized groups. Utilizing techniques like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and mindfulness, Alysse collaborates with clients to develop personalized treatment plans, fostering a safe and compassionate environment for growth and healing.

Unsung Hero Award Nominee

An American Dream story, Owner Eva Kerschbaumer took her background in cosmetology and left Hungary for America at age 22 with just $50 in her pocket. She taught herself to speak English by watching Gilligan’s Island and worked towards the growth of ESSpa, now a nationally recognized day spa known for the finest organic ingredients. Eva spent the first 15 years of her life as the daughter of a warden of a secret communist prison gulag. On fleeing to America, Eva met her now husband, Scott Kerschbaumer and together the two began to build a dream from an old Ford garage.

Creative Tastemaker Award Nominee

Genevieve Barbee-Turner, an accomplished illustrator and artist, has carved out a distinctive niche in Pittsburgh’s art scene by merging her fine arts expertise with the practice of tarot. With deep family roots in the city and a love for its unique landscape, Genevieve’s work captures the essence of Pittsburgh and the broader Appalachian region through her innovative tarot decks. Her creations, like the “Bridge Witches” and “HAUNTED” decks, blend local folklore, history, and personal narratives, offering a powerful medium for storytelling and exploration.

Sarah McKenzie is a seasoned tarot card reader with over 30 years of experience, rooted in a family tradition passed down from her grandmother. Her passion for tarot lies in its ability to provide guidance, insight, and comfort to those seeking clarity in their lives. Balancing her mystical practice with professional responsibilities, Sarah is dedicated to offering trustworthy and insightful readings, helping clients navigate their challenges with newfound perspectives. Her journey is one of continuous learning and growth, as she aims to expand her reach while maintaining the depth and authenticity of her practice.

Rae Coleman, a Pittsburgh native, is a certified event planner, floral specialist, and entrepreneur who has made a significant impact on the city’s cultural landscape through her business, Enhanced Creativity. With over 15 years of experience, Rae has become a sought-after expert in organizing culturally rich and meaningful events, from Yoruba weddings to Jewish ceremonies. Her dedication to understanding diverse traditions, coupled with her certifications and recognition as a Minority Women Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (MWDBE), has solidified her reputation as a leader in Pittsburgh’s event planning community. Beyond her professional work, Rae is deeply committed to community service, organizing fundraisers and cultural events that bring people together and celebrate the rich tapestry of traditions in the city.

Unsung Hero Award Nominee

Kelly Pollard’s journey through stage four non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Diagnosed suddenly after experiencing severe symptoms during a vacation, Kelly’s life was turned upside down in an instant. Despite the intense and invasive treatment, including six cycles of chemotherapy, Kelly faced her battle with unwavering courage, supported by her husband, mother, and a compassionate community. Her experience reshaped her worldview, teaching her to cherish each day and prioritize her well-being. Now a survivor, Kelly’s story serves as a beacon of hope, reminding others that even in the darkest times, the human spirit can endure and thrive.

Dream Queen Visionary Award Nominee

Jennifer Zebo is the compassionate and dedicated founder of Harvest Street Mission, a nonprofit organization that brings hope and kindness to the heart of Pittsburgh. With a deep commitment to her faith and a passion for serving others, Jennifer leads a team of volunteers in providing meals, clothing, and support to those in need every week at Allegheny Commons Park. Her work is driven by a desire to create a community where everyone feels valued and loved, making a lasting impact on the lives of both the guests and volunteers involved in the mission. Jennifer’s leadership and unwavering dedication have made Harvest Street Mission a beacon of hope in the Pittsburgh community.

Queenmaker Award Nominee

Rebecca Finley is a dynamic leader whose journey from the military to motivational leadership embodies resilience, empowerment, and personal growth. Twice enlisting in the military, Rebecca honed her adaptability and leadership skills in a predominantly male-dominated environment, rising to become an officer with unwavering determination. As a mother and a passionate advocate for empowerment, she instills confidence and integrity in her daughters, teaching them to stand up for themselves and embrace accountability. Beyond her military achievements, Rebecca’s love for fashion reflects her bold and multifaceted personality, seamlessly blending discipline with creative expression. Her story inspires women to pursue their passions with resilience and confidence.

Walker Change Agent Award Nominee

Maria Hernandez-Castaneda is an undergraduate student at the University of Pittsburgh. She is a senior majoring in Psychology, minoring in GSWS and Film & Media Studies. Maria is a volunteer research assistant of the CREAR Lab. In addition to her studies, Maria is also a full-time Resident Assistant in Lothrop Hall and a library assistant at Benedum Engineering Library. Outside of academia and work, she enjoys taking part in a well-rounded routine of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and immersing herself in her culture while also making room to learn about others. She works diligently to create a safe space for women of color to speak and be heard with her position of Vice President for Women of Color Collective at Pitt. After being featured in a SGP article and nominated, Maria joined the SITI Girl Pittsburgh team as a Journalist and Social Media Manager.

Lori Ann Lewicki, author of “Surviving Sh!t Creek: Breakdowns, Breakthroughs, and Transformation,” shares her remarkable journey from overcoming personal struggles to offering hope and guidance to others. As a nurse and a mother, Lori has faced numerous challenges, including growing up with a Vietnam veteran father and battling her own health issues. Her book reflects her resilience and determination to transform adversity into strength, providing a beacon of hope for anyone navigating difficult times. Through her story, Lori inspires others to embrace their own healing journeys and find light in even the darkest moments.

Through outreach events, group therapy, and individual counseling, Amy helps guide these women on their journey to rediscover their true identities and rebuild their lives. Her commitment to holistic healing and community collaboration is evident in the project’s impact, offering both emotional support and essential resources to those in need. Amy’s work with the Extravagant Love Project stands as a powerful statement to the impact of compassion and dedicated service in transforming lives.

Lori Beno is a trailblazer in the sobriety and fitness community, having founded Pittsburgh FAST (Fit, Active & Sober Together) to offer a dynamic alternative to traditional recovery programs. Her own journey to sobriety led her to discover the powerful role physical activity plays in maintaining a healthy, alcohol-free lifestyle. Through Pittsburgh FAST, Lori has built a vibrant, inclusive community where individuals of all fitness levels can find support, connection, and a renewed sense of purpose. Lori’s work is a testament to the transformative power of sobriety and the joy of reclaiming one’s life through positive, active engagement.

Dr. Sonja Svihla is a multifaceted force of nature, blending her expertise as an engineering project manager with her vibrant passions for hip hop fitness, music, and photography. Overcoming profound personal tragedies, Sonja channels her strength into impactful community work, including her role at the Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority, where she contributes to vital infrastructure projects. Her diverse interests, from wakesurfing to capturing celestial photography, reflect her commitment to living life fully and inspiring others to do the same. Sonja’s journey is a powerful testament to resilience, creativity, and the relentless pursuit of excellence in all aspects of life.

Susan Miller is a visionary entrepreneur and community leader based in Pittsburgh, PA, and the President and Founder of STEER Business Consulting and Coaching. With a dynamic approach to business, Susan is dedicated to fostering local development and empowering entrepreneurs through her leadership. As the founder of the Women’s Small Business Association (WSBA), she champions the growth of new businesses, particularly those led by women, nurturing a vibrant ecosystem of entrepreneurship in the Pittsburgh community. Susan’s work reflects her passion for professional and personal growth, helping entrepreneurs scale their ventures and connect with essential resources.

Dream Queen Visionary Award Nominee

Charissa Lauren is reputably known as “The Carrie Bradshaw of PR.” As a National Publicist, Writer, and CEO of FAME by CL, she uses her first-hand experiences in the entertainment industry to position creative professionals publicly.

A stage background in theater, pageants and modeling introduced her to the fast-paced industries of fashion and entertainment where she worked entry level with companies Victor’s International Modeling Agency, Barbizon Model & Talent, The Talent Group, Miss Pennsylvania USA, the Fashion Board at The Mall at Robinson and Nancy Mosser Casting. Privileged to work on the set of blockbuster films Adventure Land, She’s out of my League, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Zac & Miri and Jack Reacher with Mosser Casting, the entertainment business stuck.

Dr. Shellie Hipsky is the CEO of Inspiring Lives International, a motivational media company. She is the president of the non-profit 501 (c)(3) the Global Sisterhood, a charity that guides and supports women and girls toward their dreams and goals. She earned Entrepreneur of the Year in Inspiration and Empowerment, the Women of Achievement Award, Best Woman in Business, and VIP Woman of the Year. Three of her 11 published books, the Common Threads trilogy, earned international best-seller status. These books provide Inspiration, Empowerment, and Balance, based on 100 amazing interviews from her Empowering Women Radio show. The host of the TV show Inspiring Lives With Dr. Shellie is a former tenured professor who has keynoted internationally from the United Way Powerful Connections for Women Conference to The University of Oxford in England. She is delighted to be the editor-in-chief of Inspiring Lives Magazine, which is available nationally at Barnes and Noble or via subscription.
